Your website is not a portfolio, it's a shop assistant

Published 10 July 2026

There's a kind of website founders are quietly proud of and visitors quietly leave. It's beautiful. It's calm. It has a full screen photo, a tasteful serif and the words 'crafting considered somethings' floating in the middle. It is a portfolio, and a portfolio's job is to be admired.

A shop assistant's job is different. She notices you, works out what you need, answers the question you were embarrassed to ask and walks you to the till. That is what your website is for.

Admiration doesn't leave a phone number

Visitors who admire you feel no obligation to contact you. The site let them browse anonymously, nod appreciatively and close the tab with their questions unanswered. What was your price range. Whether you work with businesses their size. Whether you have availability this side of Christmas.

Every unanswered question is a person who meant to enquire and didn't. The tragedy is that most founders read that silence as not being good enough, when actually the site just never asked for the sale.

What the shop assistant site does differently

It greets people by naming who it serves, immediately, so the right visitor relaxes. It answers the awkward questions on the page, prices or at least ranges, process, timelines. It asks for the enquiry more than once, in different moods, because people decide at different speeds.

And it works the late shift. Enquiries do not keep office hours, which is why we built an entire service around answering the ones that arrive at 11pm.

Beauty still matters, it's just not the job

None of this is an argument for ugly websites. In our world the craft is the credibility. But beauty is the uniform, not the employee. Dress the assistant well, absolutely. Then make sure she actually talks to the customers.

Beauty is the uniform, not the employee. Make sure your website actually talks to the customers.

If your site is admired and ignored in equal measure, Fully Custom Website Design is the fix, structure first, beauty in service of it.
